Women's Health Q&A
What is women’s health?
Women’s health is a branch of medicine focused on diagnosing, treating, and preventing illness in women. Men and women experience many of the same health problems, but their unique reproductive organs increase the risk of certain issues.
Some of the most common problems that affect women’s health include breast cancer, cervical cancer, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and endometriosis.
What services does women’s health include?
Dr. Singh offers a wide range of women’s health services, including:
Annual physicals
An annual physical is an exam to check on your overall health and well-being. During a physical, Dr. Singh reviews your medical history, asks you about any symptoms you’re experiencing, and monitors your vital signs, including your heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure. If necessary, Dr. Singh can also order lab tests or update your immunizations.
Pap tests
A Pap test is a preventive screening to determine your risk of cervical cancer. During a Pap test, Dr. Singh uses a swab to take a sample of cells from the surface of your cervix. He then sends the cells to a laboratory for further review.
Mammograms
A mammogram is a preventive screening measure to detect breast cancer. A mammogram takes a series of low-dose X-rays to look for lumps or cancerous growths in one or both breasts.
Birth control
If you’re sexually active but don’t want to start a family, Dr. Singh can also provide birth control. There are several types of birth control, including oral contraceptives, patches, and intrauterine devices, or IUDs.
Menopause
Menopause signals the end of a woman’s reproductive life cycle. Though this is a perfectly normal part of a woman’s natural aging process, it can present a variety of uncomfortable symptoms, including irritability, fatigue, and hot flashes. Dr. Singh offers hormone balancing and menopause treatment.
How often should I get women’s health screenings?
You can significantly lower your risk of serious health problems by participating in women’s health screenings at least once a year.
Many chronic conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes don’t present obvious symptoms early on. Annual exams and preventive screenings can alert you to potential problems and preserve your quality of life.
